As you know, Korean wave (K-wave) is affecting the whole world in term of entertainment. Almost all the area of entertainment such as drama (Boys Before flower), variety shows (Runningman), and even music (Girl Generation) except one, cartoon animation. So far, cartoon animation is still underdog compare to unexpected grow of another Korean entertainment. Thus, today the author will talk more about the animation in Korea and will it grow based on author perception and hobby (reading comics and cartoon). Click for more.
Compare to Japan and United States, cartoon industry in Korea is small even though they are third biggest in the world[1]. However, the potential to be a giant in this industry is very high. Until now, Pororo is recently become one of the most watch popular cartoon for kids in kindergarten. The King of Pigs released on 2013 in UK also became a big hit with their touching story.Looking at this animation, Korea has the power to take over the control of whole entertainment in the world, Thus this week, I will write my opinion about animation and what they are lacking from US and Japan.
Webtoon is a "potential
Mostly, Japanese animation or we can call it "Anime" came from a comics that has high rating. Korea could follow the success of their neighboor by adapting storyline of the Webtoon that recently rising not only in Korea, but also in the world. For example, in website "Mangafox.com", webtoon called "The gamer" and "Girls of the Wilds" currently on top 10 of all comics (Japan, Korea, and China) all around the world. My worry about rating of webtoon is solved after looking at the adaptation drama of one webtoon with rating 7.8 on "Imdb,com" (which is pretty good). Therefore with this rating, Webtoon is a promising start for animator in Korea and might ignite the animation rating in Korea.
Collaborate with gaming animator
You know that the gaming culture in Korea is very thick. Many people release stress from school and work through game. Since game is a promising business, many talented animator decided to take chance or work in game.One of the current game from that adapted from webtoon is "God of High school". It's pretty good RPG game and the story line is from webtoon called God of high school. Thus the effect is Korea animation suffer on lower skill employee and the animation is not grow. Collaborating or taking animator from game industry might harm the game economic, but 100% will improve the animation in Korea and become as good as Japan or United States.
Riding the Korean Wave
This current era is the best for Korea animation to receive attention from all over the world. Many people eyeing on South Korea and interested on Korea in entertainment. Thus many people access internet to find a Korean entertainment. However, this golden era on Korea entertainment might end very soon just like China golden era long time ago. While the K-wave (Hallyu) is not yet finish, animator need to use this wind to change everything into better. Failing to ride this will affect greatly and Korea animation industry might not rise throughout the world.
Government and TV company support
I am not blind enough that I never watch TV in Korea. Based on the news that I heard maybe a year ago, government support the Hallyu and talent export of Korea to the other country. Because of this, Korean music and entertainment can grow larger and larger. Thus, government support might be a good idea. TV company also need to support Korea animation by moving this animation to a better time. A bet need to raise in order to win big.
In conclusion, animation in Korea has high potential and can dominate all over the world. However, lack of support and interest from Korea government and citizen might be the problem that hindering this industry to grow. Thus in order to grow, animation industry need to increase the quality of story and graphic, releasing at correct time, and support from government and TV company. With my advice, Korea can dominate all over the TV around the world.
